Code of conduct for vloggers needed, says PCO chief
MANILA, Philippines — Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Secretary Jay Ruiz pushed for a code of conduct for vloggers, citing a need for regulation to combat fake news.
Ruiz made this statement at the launch of the “Media Safety Vanguards” of the Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFOMS) at the Philippine Information Agency headquarters in Quezon City on Tuesday.
“On the part naman ng mga vloggers, dapat din magkaroon rin sila ng code of conduct kasi hindi naman pwedeng malaya ka na lang magmura sa isang tao, siraan mo nang siraan yung isang tao o administrasyon na wala man lang consequences, na walang katotohanan,” he said.
(On the part of the vloggers, they should have their own code of conduct because they cannot just curse or besmirch the reputation of people or the administration without consequences, or is far from the truth.)
“Ang nangyayari, dahil sa fake news, nagkahati-hati ang mga Pilipino, nagkakasiraan (What’s happening is because of fake news, Filipinos are being divided, tearing each other down),” the PCO secretary added.

Ruiz, a veteran broadcast journalist prior to taking the PCO helm, pointed to self-regulatory bodies for traditional media such as the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas.
“[S]a traditional media, magkamali ka minsan, tanggal ka. Ganoon kastrikto yun. Doon (social media), magmura ka, manira ka ng tao… ang dami, puro fake news, walang consequences,” he stressed.
(In traditional media, make a mistake, you’re gone. That’s how strict it is. Here, you curse, you defame a person, all fake news, no consequences.)
