Bam Aquino vows monthly salary for watchmen, health workers
LEGAZPI CITY — Former senator and independent senatorial candidate Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV promised to support the welfare of barangay tanods (village watchmen) and barangay health workers (BHWs) if re-elected to the Senate this May.
During a dialogue with barangay tanods and BHWs alongside mayoral candidate former Vice President Leni Robredo in Naga City on Thursday, April 10, Aquino emphasized that these frontliners, who play a key role in maintaining order and health in their communities, deserve proper recognition and benefits.
Aquino also proposed that barangay tanods and BHWs must be provided a monthly salary and Philhealth coverage, as well as free training and legal assistance if they face any cases related to their duties.
“It’s time to properly value our tanods and those who are helping in our barangays. Let’s not treat them as volunteers. Let’s treat them as real workers in our barangays,” Aquino said in a statement.
Aquino had previously filed Senate Bill No. 700, or the Support for Barangay Workers Act, in 2016, but it was not acted upon by the Senate before his term ended in 2019.
