Sick boy needs liver transplant

/ 10:37 PM July 04, 2011

Bernardita Bernardo’s only son, 11-year-old Alec Joshua, has Wilson’s disease, a rare ailment in which copper is retained inside the body, affecting either the liver, brain, eyes or kidneys.

“The normal amount of copper inside a human body must only be between 15 and 60 micrograms. There’s too much of it inside him,” Bernardo told the Inquirer in Filipino.

She said her son’s damaged liver could be treated by a transplant that would be done at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Kaoshiung, Taiwan. However, for the operation alone, she would need P2.2 million.

“We cannot afford such a huge amount that is why I am appealing to your [readers’ sense of] charity and compassion,” Bernardo said.

Those interested in helping Alec Joshua Bernardo can call his mother at 0917-7349527. Donations can be deposited in the boy’s BDO account (account number 347-007-2870) or Bernardita’s Bank of the Philippine Islands account (3279-0337-78).
