On YouTube: Flyovers slow down traffic in Cebu City

TO muster support for their cause, the sectoral group Movement for Liveable Cebu uploaded a video in YouTube to show how flyovers worsen, rather than reduce, traffic congestion in Cebu City.

The four minutes and 30 seconds video “Inner City flyovers vs flared intersections” compared traffic flow was better in flared intersections which cost less than 20 percent than concrete flyovers. s.

MLC convenor Rudy Alix told Cebu Daily that the video is one way to show alternative solutions to costly flyovers.

“To simplify the message to the Cebuanos and all Filipinos in general to know what the movement is all about. To show that there are different alternatives,” Alix said.

MLC volunteers shot video of intersections where two flyovers are located and in Cebu Business Park for about one month at different time periods and days in the week, specifically peak hours. Teh video also shows front pages of Cebu Daily on the flyover debate.

In one scene, there was bumper-to-bumper traffic and a bottleneck where vehicles headed to the flyover along Archbishop Reyes Avenue in Banilad, Cebu City at 7 a.m.

The same is true in the traffic at the flyover in Archbishop Reyes Avenue near Ayala Center Cebu.

In contrast, traffic was smoother in a flared intersection in Cebu Business Park.

“Even in the busiest intersection, the flow looks choreographed. Notice the smooth traffic flow. Everybody waits because they know their turn will come. Flyovers cause disorderly flow; flared intersection instills discipline,” a description of the flared intersection clip reads.

The video was posted last Friday and is so far viewed by 698 people and 19 ‘likes’.

MLC is strongly opposed to the flyover projects lobbied by Rep. Cutie del Mar and her father, former congressman Raul del Mar.
