MOSCOW鈥擱ussian President Vladimir Putin and his wife Lyudmila Thursday announced their divorce after three decades of marriage, in a stunning revelation that ended years of speculation about their union.
The pair, who have two daughters in their late 20s, made the announcement side-by-side in a joint interview with state television after watching a ballet performance inside the Kremlin.
Persistent rumors have swirled for years around Putin鈥檚 marriage and even alleged mistresses but until now there has been a total taboo over discussing his private life in mainstream Russian media.
鈥淚t was a joint decision,鈥 Putin said in the interview with Rossia-24 television which appeared to have been carefully choreographed in advance. 鈥淲e are always going to be very close to each other. I am sure, forever.鈥
鈥淥ur marriage is over, really because of the fact that we practically never see each other,鈥 added Lyudmila, who has been almost invisible in public in recent years.
鈥淚t really was our joint decision. Vladimir Vladimirovich is completely drowned in work, our children have grown up and they are living their own lives,鈥 said Lyudmila.
鈥淚 really do not like publicity. Flights are difficult for me and we practically do not see each other,鈥 she added.
Putin echoed that, unlike him, Lyudmila deeply disliked publicity and praised her for her devotion in 鈥渟tanding guard鈥 for so many years.
鈥淲e have very good relations,鈥 said Lyudmila. 鈥淚 am very grateful to Vladimir Vladimirovich that he still supports me. And the children, he really cares for them. And the children feel this.鈥
鈥淵ou can say it is a civilized divorce,鈥 she added.
Putin also rejected rumors that their daughters Maria and Ekaterina were living abroad. 鈥淭hey received their education in Russia and live in Russia all the time,鈥 he said.
The pair made the revelation after together watching the classical ballet 鈥淓smeralda鈥 performed by the State Kremlin Ballet company at the State Kremlin Palace.
The ballet, a rarity in the West but popular in Russia, is based on Victor Hugo鈥檚 novel 鈥淭he Hunchback of Notre Dame鈥 and tells the story of the hunchback Quasimodo鈥檚 hopeless love for the gypsy Esmeralda.
Bizarrely, the state television journalist asked the pair about the ballet before daring to pop the big question about divorce. Putin praised the ballet as 鈥減erfect, great music, production, performance.鈥
His spokesman Dmitry Peskov, contacted by AFP, confirmed the divorce. In the interview, neither Putin, 60, nor Lyudmila, believed to be 55, gave any clues over their current private situations.
鈥榃ill Putin marry a second time?鈥
The divorce announcement, while ending the speculation about their marriage, appears set to unleash a new frenetic guessing game about who the Russian strongman could be seeing now.
鈥淣ow the most interesting thing begins: will Putin marry a second time? And who?鈥 the liberal Slon.ru website commented.
The Moskovsky Korrespondent newspaper, owned by tycoon Alexander Lebedev, reported in 2008 that he was about to marry Olympic gymnast turned legislator Alina Kabayeva, 31 years his junior.
The report was denied and the paper closed down shortly afterwards. Putin then slammed people with 鈥渟notty noses and erotic fantasies鈥 who interfered in other people鈥檚 private lives.
Putin and Lyudmila have been seen together extremely rarely in the last years and their last public appearance seems to date back to May 2012 after Putin was inaugurated for a third term in office.
Lyudmila Putina was seen alone at an awards ceremony in March, her first public appearance since then.
Over the past years Putin usually appeared at official functions including foreign visits alone, even if the presence of the first lady was expected according to conventional protocol.
The future Russian president, then working as a KGB agent, married Lyudmila Shkrebneva in July 1983, before he started his posting as a spy in the East German city of Dresden in 1985.
They first met in Putin鈥檚 home city of Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg) when Lyudmila, then working as a flight attendant, came for a short visit with a girlfriend. A friend then introduced them.
According to his biography on his official website, Putin proposed to Lyudmila three years after their first encounter. 鈥淚 knew that if I did not get married in two or three years, then I never would,鈥 Putin is quoted as saying.
