Today, August 18, is the 85th birth anniversary of the late cartoonist Larry Alcala. One of the original representatives of illustrators in the Philippine Board on Books for Young People (PBBY), Alcala started his career at the age of 17. One of his most popular creations was “Kalabog and Bosyo,” which inspired a film that starred Dolphy and Panchito.  Alcala taught at his alma mater, the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts, for about 30 years.—Schatzi Quodala, Inquirer Research
