Manila asks Congress to protect kids

The Manila City Council, in a resolution adopted last week, urged Congress to pass a law prohibiting the use of toxic chemicals in children鈥檚 products.

Authored by Councilor Numero Lim, the resolution cited the recent findings of EcoWaste Coalition that 78 of 100 samples of children鈥檚 bracelets, earrings, necklaces and rings bought in July in Divisoria, Manila, contained harmful chemicals, particularly lead and cadmium.

At the same time, it also expressed 鈥渟trong and unqualified support for the call of EcoWaste Coalition for the passage in Congress of legislation against toxic chemicals in children鈥檚 products.鈥

Copies of the resolution will be sent to the House, Senate, the Office of the Executive Secretary and the watch group.
