Did you know: The arrival of Jesuits in the Philippines

/ 02:52 AM September 17, 2013

The Jesuits, or the Society of Jesus, first arrived in the country on Sept. 17, 1581. Sent at the request of Don Guido de Lavezaris, then the governor of the Philippines, their first areas of assignments were Santa Cruz, Quiapo and San Miguel in Manila. Jesuit priests Antonio Sedeño and Alonso Sanchez, and Brother Nicolas Gallardo, who arrived in the same ship as Domingo de Salazar, the first bishop of Manila, settled temporarily in Lagyo (between the present districts of Ermita and Malate) before moving to Intramuros.—Schatzi Quodala, Inquirer Research
