‘Yolanda’ destroys Pagasa monitoring equipment in Guiuan

MANILA, Philippines—The Doppler radar and other weather monitoring equipment of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa)  in Guiuan, Eastern Samar were destroyed by Supertyphoon “Yolanda” (Haiyan), Radyo Inquirer 990AM Wednesday.

The weather bureau’s communication device was also severely damaged when “Yolanda” made its first landfall in Guiuan and flattened the fishing  town, weather forecaster Aldzcar Aurelio said.

He said that Pagasa now has no contact with its personnel in Guiuan.

In Tacloban City, Aurelio said the agency’s station in the severely devastated capital of Leyte province was also damaged.

Its weather monitoring equipment in Cebu, meanwhile, has not been affected but the weather bureau has no information yet on the status of its stations in Panay and Coron Palawan, Aurelio said.
