Hotel group: Triathlon to help tourism in Bantayan

11:04 AM December 16, 2013

TO restore tourism activities in Bantayan Island and at the same time help people in the island rebuild their homes and livelihood, the Hotel Resort and Restaurant Association in Cebu (HRRAC) will hold a triathlon event this summer.
In an interview last week, HRRAC president Cenelyn Manguilimotan said that they have already planned out the event that they will call “Tri to Rehabilitate Bantayan Island.”
“The word “tri” stands for triathlon which is what we want to do this coming May,” said Manguilimotan.
Manguilimotan added that they have held  initial talks with Bantayan Mayor Ian Escario who already said he will support the event.
The plan is to hold it after Holy Week in April so they have set it on May 3 to 4.
“We expect the triathletes to arrive on the third (of May) for the race the following day,” she said.
With most accommodation properties damaged in the island, Manguilimotan said that they will set up tents where the racers can stay and provide ample water and sanitation facilities for their convenience.
Those who prefer to do so may bring their own tents.
“All the proceeds will be donated to Bantayan Island for their rebuilding efforts. We will only give trophies and medals. No more cash prizes,” she added.
They hope to gather 300 to 400 triathletes for the event which will require a P1,500 registration fee.
“The race will be held within the island. Say, a one-kilometer swim then run and then bike.”
ironman 70.3
Lapu-Lapu City tourism office head Hembler Mendoza said the event is very timely as those who are preparing for the Ironman 70.3 event on August 3 to 4 would want to join in the event as part of their training.
“We will be hitting a lot of birds with one stone. I’m sure they (racers) would really like to help the typhoon victims in the island. They can also train at the same time and Bantayan Island which is a major tourism destination of Cebu is set to benefit from this,” said Mendoza.
Manguilimotan said that they will be meeting other members who can help in the transportation arrangements of the participants.
“So far, I could say that we are almost done with the preparations and will be doing a lot of promotions for the activity to really get as many participants as we can. This is our way of helping the industry,” said Manguilimotan.
