Cops probe reports mayor slapped basketball player after friendly

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines – The mayor of Pagadian City allegedly slapped a teenaged basketball player after a friendly match in Dipolog City on Tuesday night.

Chief Inspector Ariel Huesca, spokesperson of the Western Mindanao Police Office, said reports reaching their office showed that Pagadian Mayor Romeo Pulmones slapped 16-year-old Julius Macera Jr. of the Zamboanga Sibugay basketball team, inside the Dipolog City Sports Complex.

Based on initial information received by Huesca, the assault happened after the basketball game between Zamboanga Sibugay and Pagadian City teams. The game was part of the Zamboanga Peninsula Regional Athletic Association (ZPRAA).

The mayor was not picking up his phone when the Philippine Daily Inquirer tried to call him several times.

Parcon also said that reports reaching his office showed that the Pagadian team’s coach, not Pulmones, was the one who slapped Macera.
