After 17 years, Bangsamoro peace pact signed

Miriam Coronel-Ferrer-Al-Haj-Murad-Ebrahim-bangsamoro agreement

The Philippine government through chief negotiator Miriam Coronel-Ferrer and the MILF Al Haj Murad signed Thursday the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB) at the Malaca帽an Palace.

MANILA, Philippines 鈥 Peace, at last.

After 17 years of peace talks between the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and the Philippine government, the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB) was signed at the Malaca帽ang Palace on Thursday.

More than a thousand people filled the expansive tent set up on Malaca帽ang grounds while hundreds of Muslim groups gathered in Quiapo in anticipation of the historic event.

The signing of the CAB marks the culmination of the 17 years of peace negotiations between the two parties and the supposed end to decades of armed conflict in Mindanao. It will pave the way for a new Bangsamoro autonomous political entity that will replace the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao and will address various issues in the area such as poverty.

President Benigno Aquino III and Muslim leaders witnessed the signing Thursday in the presidential palace.

Earlier in the ceremony, Secretary Teresita Quintos Deles, presidential adviser on the peace process, declared that there would be 鈥渘o more war鈥 with the signing of the deal.

鈥淣o more war, no more children scampering for safety, no more evacuees鈥o more poverty, no more fear鈥ama na (Enough), we are all tired of them,鈥 she said during her speech at the Malaca帽ang grounds.

Deles said the 鈥渘ew dawn鈥 after the signing of the historic agreement would ensure that 鈥渘o family will be forced to drive their children away for fear of being maimed or wounded by conflict.鈥

During the event, attended by foreign dignitaries, the Secretary thanked all those who made the signing possible, especially President Benigno Aquino III.

鈥淥ur common intentions will drive us forward,鈥 she told the audience that included almost 500 members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.

Talks on the deal began in 2001 and a cease-fire has been in place since 1997.

The agreement will create an autonomous Muslim region in a large part of the southern Mindanao region.

The signing is a major political victory for Aquino midway into his six-year term, but much work remains to ensure the accord鈥檚 full implementation.

Mindanao is home to other insurgent groups, at least one of which has vowed to keep fighting. 鈥 With a report from Associated Press
