Fire hits Wendy’s warehouse in Marikina; media presence angers female exec

MANILA, Philippines — As Typhoon “Glenda” ripped through Metro Manila Wednesday, fire hit a warehouse of a fastfood chain in a commercial-residential area in Marikina City although no injuries were reported.

Superintendent Marcos Valen of the city’s fire department told ºÚÁÏÉç that the fire at the warehouse of Wendy’s Hamburger along Gen. Mariano Ordonez St. in Marikina Heights started at 9:25 a.m and was put out at 9:40 a.m.

Valen said the cause of the fire, which an unidentified staff claimed started at the IT and training office, was under investigation.

When ºÚÁÏÉç tried to get more information, a female employee, who was identified as an executive, angrily told this writer off despite efforts to get the side of the company.

First to respond to the alarm was the team of volunteers of Barangay Captain Edwin Adigue who told ºÚÁÏÉç in a separate interview that they arrived about five minutes after the fire alarm sounded off.

When asked why a food warehouse was in a largely residential area, Adigue said this was based on a city ordinance that classified Marikina Heights as a “residential-commercial” area.

He said that based on the latest census of the National Statistics office there were 38,000 homes in Marikina Heights.

He also said that no casualties have been reported so far from “Glenda”.
