73-year-old Binay says he’s fit to run for President

MANILA, Philippines—Vice President Jejomar Binay may be 73 years old but he believes that he is very much fit to run for public office in the 2016 elections.

“I can still exercise,” Binay told television host-news anchor Anthony Taberna over “Tapatan ni Tunying” aired on Thursday afternoon.

Binay also dispelled persistent rumors that he has a kidney ailment.

“If you undergo dialysis, you are poked by needles and when you are touched it’s like you are electrocuted,” he said.

Dialysis is a medical procedure for removing waste and excess water from the blood, as a replacement for failure of kidney function.

Binay said the issue of kidney ailment has been thrown at him since 1990s.

“Mahilig akong tumawa. Yung mga seryoso yun ang nadadale (I am fond of laughing. Those who are serious are the ones who got hit [by illnesses]),” Binay said.

The Vice President has been open of his plans to run for President in the next elections.

“Di ako magpapaka-ipokrito. Ako ay tatakbo sa 2016 (I am not a hypocrite. I am running [for President] in 2016),” he told Taberna.

He said they were already considering possible running mates but declined to identify them.

“Nandun po kami nagkukunsidera ng makakasama ko na Pangalawang Pangulo. Kung ang nag-aasam-asam eh five-to-six at sinabi mo na, kinabukasan mababatikos na agad sila (We are already there, [we are] considering who will be with me as Vice President. If those who are aspiring is five-to-six at you tell who there are, by tomorrow they will be criticized),” Binay said.
