Korean student fights back, recovers phone from snatcher

MANILA, Philippines—A Korean student at the De La Salle-College of St. Benilde was able to recover her smartphone from a snatcher whom she chased and wrestled with along Taft Ave., Manila, on Monday evening.

Youn Su Kim, the 19-year-old freshman, was walking home at around 9:30 p.m. to her dormitory at One Archer’s Place on Taft Avenue when the 34-year-old suspect, whom police identified as Francis Antonio, grabbed the smartphone worth P20,000 in her hand.

Police said Kim ran after Antonio and caught up with him near Estrada Street. She immediately tried to wrest her phone from Antonio, who after a few minutes finally gave up and dropped the phone on the pavement.

Guards at the school, who followed Kim running after the suspect, collared Antonio just before he could escape. He is now detained at the Manila Police District on United Nations Avenue.
