MANILA, Philippines – After having allegedly killed hundreds of civilians as a soldier and an officer, retired Major GeneralJovitoPalparan,knownas “The Butcher” has admitted that he feared being killed by “the enemy”.
“I don’t want to be killed by the enemy,” saidPalparanin a live radio interview when asked how he was arrested early Tuesday by joint operatives of the National Bureau of Investigation and the Naval Intelligence Group.
Palparan, whose reputation for being ruthless against suspected members of the Communist Party of the Philippines earned him themonicker“The Butcher”, said he wanted to be detained in a jail facility where his security would be ensured and that he won’t be killed by “the enemy”, which would be considered a victory by “the movement”.
He identified neither “the enemy” nor “the movement”.
Palparanalso said that apart from his security, he also demanded that his health be checked as he was worried that he may be underweight.
Palparanwas arrested early Tuesday on Teresa St., in Sta. Mesa, Manila by virtue of an arrest warrant issued byMalolosregional trial court on charges of serious illegal detention and kidnapping of two University of the PhilippinesDilimanstudents KarenEmpeñoand SherlynCadapanwho were abducted by alleged military elements.
Palparanhas a P2 million bounty over his head and one of the “Big 5” most wanted men in the country along withFormer Palawan Governor Joel Reyes and his brother, formerCoronMayor Mario Reyes, formerDinagatIsland Representative RubenEcleoJr. and GlobeAsiatiquedeveloperDelfinLee. Lee has been arrested.
