Jovito Palparan: I don鈥檛 want to be killed by the enemy

MANILA, Philippines 鈥� After having allegedly killed hundreds of civilians as a soldier and an officer, retired Major General听Jovito听Palparan,听known听as 鈥淭he Butcher鈥� has admitted that he feared being killed by 鈥渢he enemy鈥�.

鈥淚 don鈥檛 want to be killed by the enemy,鈥� said听Palparan听in a live radio interview when asked how he was arrested early Tuesday by joint operatives of the National Bureau of Investigation and the Naval Intelligence Group.

Palparan, whose reputation for being ruthless against suspected members of the Communist Party of the Philippines earned him the听monicker听鈥淭he Butcher鈥�, said he wanted to be detained in a jail facility where his security would be ensured and that he won鈥檛 be killed by 鈥渢he enemy鈥�, which would be considered a victory by 鈥渢he movement鈥�.

He identified neither 鈥渢he enemy鈥� nor 鈥渢he movement鈥�.

Palparan听also said that apart from his security, he also demanded that his health be checked as he was worried that he may be underweight.

Palparan听was arrested early Tuesday on Teresa St., in Sta. Mesa, Manila by virtue of an arrest warrant issued by听Malolos听regional trial court on charges of serious illegal detention and kidnapping of two University of the Philippines听Diliman听students Karen听Empe帽o听and Sherlyn听Cadapan听who were abducted by alleged military elements.

Palparan听has a P2 million bounty over his head and one of the 鈥淏ig 5鈥� most wanted men in the country along with听听Former Palawan Governor Joel Reyes and his brother, former听Coron听Mayor Mario Reyes, former听Dinagat听Island Representative Ruben听Ecleo听Jr. and Globe听Asiatique听developer听Delfin听Lee. Lee has been arrested.
