MANILA, Philippines – Typhoon “Luis” (international codename:Kalmaegi) is now located at 266 km North Northeast ofVirac,Catanduanesor at 347 km East Southeast ofCasiguran, Aurora, the state weather bureau said Sunday morning.
In its 4 a.m. bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Typhoon Luis has recorded maximum winds of 120kphand gustiness of up to 150kph.
It is forecast to move West Northwest at 20kph,Pagasaadded.
Pagasaalso said Cagayan Valley, Cordillera Administrative Region and the provinces of Aurora,Ilocosand La Union will experience stormy weather with rough to very rough seas.
“Pangasinan, NuevaEcija,PolilloIsland,TarlacandCatanduaneswill have rains with gusty winds. Bicol Region, the rest of Central Luzon and the province of Quezon will be cloudy with moderate to occasionally heavy rains and thunderstorms which may triggerflashfloodsand landslides,”Pagasaadded.
“The rest of Luzon andVisayaswill have cloudy skies with light to moderaterainshowersand thunderstorms. Mindanao will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolatedrainshowersor thunderstorms.
“Moderate to strong winds blowing from the Northwest to West will prevail over the rest of Luzon and coming from the Southwest over the rest of the country with moderate to rough seas,” saidPagasa.
Luis is expected to be at 86 km southeast ofTuguegaraoCity and by Sunday evening at 413 km west ofLaoagCity or outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).
Meanwhile, Storm Signal No. 2 is up overCalayanand Babuyan Group of Islands,Apayao,Kalinga,Ifugao, Mt. Province, NuevaVizcaya, Quirino and Northern Aurora. These areas are expected to experience winds from 61-100kphin at least 24 hours,Pagasasaid.
Signal No. 1is raised overBatanesgroup of Islands,IlocosNorte,IlocosSur,Abra, La Union,Benguet,Pangasinan, NuevaEcija, rest of Aurora,PolilloIsland andCatanduanes. These areas are expected to experience winds of30-60kphin at least 36 hours.
Residents in low-lying and mountainous areas under Signal Nos. 3, 2 and 1 are alerted against possible flashfloods and landslides. Likewise, those living in coastal areas under Signal Nos.3 and 2 are alerted against storm surges of up to two meters.
Estimated rainfall amount is from 8–20 mm per hour (heavy-Intense) within the 500 km diameter of the Typhoon.
The combined effect of the typhoon and the southwest monsoon will bring moderate to occasionally heavy rains and thunderstorms which may triggerflashfloodsand landslides over Bicol Region and the provinces of Samar and Quezon while light to moderate rains and thunderstorms over Metro Manila, the rest of Luzon andVisayas.
Fishing boats and other smallseacraftare advised not to venture out into the seaboards ofVisayasand the eastern seaboard of Southern Luzon and of Mindanao.
The public and the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (DRRMC) concerned are advised to take appropriate actions.
