MANILA, Philippines—The Sandiganbayan on Friday approved the 24-hour furlough of a former police comptroller tagged in the so-called “euro generals” scam to allow him to attend the wake and burial of his mother.

Citing humanitarian reasons, the antigraft court’s Fourth Division allowed retired Director Eliseo de la Paz to leave his detention cell at the Philippine National Police Custodial Center in Camp Crame, Quezon City, at 3 p.m. on Friday. He was to return to the police detention facility at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

In his motion, De la Paz said he would attend the wake of his late mother, Dominga de la Paz, at the chapel of Villamor Airbase in Pasay City and her interment at the Heritage Park in Taguig City.

“Accordingly, the PNP Custodial Center, where the accused is presently detained, is directed to escort said accused…for the specific purpose and only within the period indicated…under the proper and adequate security measures,” the court said in a two-page resolution.
