Napoleon Abueva, considered the “Father of Modern Filipino Sculpture,” was named a National Artist for Sculpture in 1976. Born on Jan. 26, 1930, Abueva was the youngest recipient of the National Artist Award at the age of 46. Some of his iconic works are the “Dambana ng Kagitingan” in Bataan, the UP Gateway, “The Transfiguration” at the Eternal Gardens Memorial Park in Caloocan, “The Nine Muses” at the UP Faculty Center, the “Sunburst” at the Peninsula Manila Hotel and the bronze figure of Teodoro M. Kalaw in front of the National Library in Manila.–Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
