Today, April 7, is the 21st death anniversary of National Artist for Visual Arts Cesar Legaspi. Born on April 2, 1917, in Tondo, Manila, Legaspi was a pioneer “neorealist” in the country and his distinctive style and daring themes contributed significantly to the advent of modern art in the country. He received the Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan award from the City of Manila in 1972 and the Gawad CCP Sining Award from the Cultural Center of the Philippines in 1990. He was conferred the title national artist in 1990. Legaspi died in 1994. Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
