Chinese Embassy expresses sympathy for victims of sea tragedy
The Chinese Embassy in the Philippines has expressed its sympathy and condolences for the victims of the capsized ferry in Ormoc City, Leyte, which left dozens dead.
In a statement, spokesperson Li Lingxiao said the Chinese Embassy “was deeply saddened to learn of the unfortunate capsize tragedy of MB Kim Nirvana.”
“Our thoughts go to the families of those who have lost loved ones and our condolences go to the Philippine people. We wish them strength and fortitude during this time of difficulty and pain,” Li said.
As of writing, the death toll from the sea mishap already reached 56. The passenger boat overturned in waters off the Ormoc central port on Thursday while on its way to Camotes Island.
Ormoc City Councilor Godiardo Ebcas told Agence France-Presse that survivors reportedly saw 150 sacks of cement in the cargo area before the ferry capsized. The owner and crew of the ferry are currently facing murder charges.
