Drilon, Pimentel: No to lifting term limits, yes to anti-dynasty law

Instead of lifting the term limits of elected officials, Senate President Franklin Drilon prefers to push for the passage of the proposed anti-dynasty bill.

鈥淣o I am not in favor of the term-lifting limits,鈥 Drilon said in a text message to reporters on Friday.

鈥淚 want to strengthen the term limitations by pushing instead the anti-dynasty bill, in order to comply with the constitutional mandate and plug the loophole in the term limits set by law,鈥 he added.

This was how Drilon countered Vice President Jejomar Binay鈥檚 proposal to lift the term limits of elected officials if the Constitution will be amended.

Binay was longtime mayor of Makati City before he was elected Vice President in 2010.

His wife, Elenita, also served as mayor of Makati while their son, Jun-Jun Binay is the incumbent mayor.

His two daugthers, Nancy, and Abigail, are also currently holding a seat in the Senate and the House of Representatives, respectively.

Senator Aqulino 鈥淜oko鈥 Pimentel III was also against Binay鈥檚 proposal.

鈥淵ung one to sawa ay from point of those in power. E kelan ba naman sila magsasawa?鈥 asked Pimentel in a separate text message.

鈥淔rom the point of the viewers, they want change except that nauutakan sila ng mga nakaupo,鈥 he added.

Pimentel said term limits must stay but said the length of term could still be changed. AU
