ISTANBUL, Turkey鈥擜 Turkish police officer who was pictured picking up the lifeless body of three-year-old Syrian refugee Aylan Kurdi鈥攚hose death pricked the world鈥檚 conscience鈥攕aid he thought of his own son when he saw the toddler on the beach.
Speaking to Turkey鈥檚 Dogan news agency, Mehmet Ciplak recounted how he prayed the little boy was still alive as he walked towards him and scooped him up from the water鈥檚 edge.
鈥淲hen I approached the baby, I said to myself, 鈥楧ear God I hope he鈥檚 alive.鈥� But he showed no signs of life. I was crushed,鈥� he said.
鈥淚 have a six-year-old son. The moment I saw the baby, I thought about my own son and put myself into his father鈥檚 place. Words cannot describe what a sad and tragic sight it was.鈥�
Ciplak added he didn鈥檛 know the photo, which reverberated across the world, was being taken and said: 鈥淚 was just doing my job.鈥�
Twelve refugees drowned on Wednesday when two boats sank on the short crossing to Greece, and images of Aylan鈥檚 lifeless body washed ashore in Bodrum in southwest Turkey sparked international outrage over Europe鈥檚 migrant crisis.
Aylan was buried on Friday in the Syrian town of Kobane, itself now a symbol of resistance by Syrian Kurds against Islamic State (IS) extremists.
Aylan鈥檚 four-year-old brother, Ghaleb, and their mother Rihana also drowned when their boat sank. His father Abdullah was the only family member to survive and has returned to Kobane to be close to the graves of his wife and children. Agence France-Presse
