There will be longer nights in the Philippines after the autumnal equinox on Wednesday, Sept. 23.

“Autumnal equinox will occur on September 23 when day and night will have equal length on Earth.  Hence, thereafter, Philippine nights will be longer as the Sun moves below the celestial equator towards the southern hemisphere,” the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said in its astronomical diary.

It will occur at 4:20 p.m.

The equinox usually signals a change of season. There are two equinoxes in a year, the other is called vernal equinox, which happens in March.

Longer nights are usually associated with Christmas season in the Philippines. It also means winter season in the northern hemisphere. Frances Mangosing/RAM
