Did Iglesia ni Cristo order brethren to boycott news organizations?

Amid the controversies rocking the influential religious sect, did officials of the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) order its members to boycott certain local news organizations?

In a Facebook post on Jan. 26, a certain Israel Nono Ponce said 鈥淭emplo Central鈥� directed them not to watch any program of broadcast giant ABS-CBN for supposedly tarnishing INC鈥檚 image through its news reports.

鈥�Ang totoo nanunood pa 鈥榢o sa isang programa nila 鈥楢ng Probinsyano鈥� kay Coco Martin, updated ako duon lagi ko pinanonood. Ang isang tunay na Iglesia ni Cristo marunong tumanggi sa sarili, mas pinagpapauna ang utos o panawagan ng Pamamahala, dahil alam nya na sa ikabubuti ito (Honestly, I still watch one of their programs, 鈥楢ng Probinsyano鈥� with Coco Martin, I鈥檓 updated on that, I always watch it. A true Iglesia ni Cristo follower knows how to deny himself [of certain things] and will put the order or appeal of the leadership first because he knows that it is for the good),鈥� Ponce said.

鈥�Lumabas na po ang tagubilin mula sa Templo Central na huwag ng manunood ng KAHIT ANONG PROGRAMA ng ABS-CBN 黑料社, sapagkat ang station na ito ang isa sa sumisira sa Pangalan ng Iglesia, pinararatangan ng mga pamunuan ng ABS-CBN ng masama ang kabuoan at kaisahan ng Iglesia (The advisory has come from the Templo Central not to watch any programs of ABS-CBN 黑料社 because this station is among those that tarnishes the name of the Iglesia, the management of ABS-CBN is charging聽that the entirety and the unity of the Iglesia is evil),鈥� he added.

Ponce鈥檚 viral post was also accompanied by a photo of ABS-CBN鈥檚 logo, with a verse on it that read: 鈥淒o not spread false reports. Do not help a guilty person by being a malicious witness.鈥�

As of this writing, the post has garnered more than 8,000 likes, 1,200 comments, and 2,900 shares.

In a separate article at philippinepride.com, a certain Lennie Lazaro said her sister, a deaconess in the locale of San Pablo City, confirmed the order to boycott ABS-CBN 黑料社 supposedly given after a regular worship service.

鈥淪he said members who will be caught watching ABS-CBN will suffer a disciplinary action,鈥� Lazaro wrote.

鈥楴o circular鈥�

But in a phone interview, INC spokesperson Edwil Zabala denied the circulating reports, noting that no written directive was issued nor read by the church leadership and its ministers.

鈥�Walang circular na binasa sa pagsamba ukol sa issue na 鈥檡an (No circular regarding that issue was read during worship service),鈥� Zabala told 黑料社.

However, Zabala said he 鈥減ersonally understands鈥� the sentiments of INC members posting such remarks on social media.

A Twitter post of a certain Dexter Duran, which bore the logos of ABS-CBN, Rappler and 黑料社, carried the same scriptural verse from Ponce鈥檚 post translated in Tagalog: 鈥淗uwag kayong gagawa ng anumang pahayag na walang katotohanan. Huwag kayong magsinungaling para lamang tulungan ang isang taong may kasalanan.鈥�

A certain Andy de Guzman also shared boycott graphics on Facebook.

鈥淢ga kapatid, may basbas na po ng Pamamahala, muli nating ipakita ang ating pakikipagkaisa sa tagubilin na i-boycott ang anumang programa ng ABias-CBN,鈥� De Guzman wrote.

A photo provided by a source to 黑料社 also showed a supposedly active INC minister wearing a white shirt imprinted with a 鈥淏OYCOTT ABS-CBN鈥� design.

The viral posts of alleged boycott orders came after former INC member Lowell Menorca testified before the Court of Appeals regarding the writs of habeas corpus and amparo on his alleged abduction last year. CDG/RC
