Ending his three-month presidential campaign, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte聽on Saturday night promised his supporters to do to the Philippines what he had done to Davao.
鈥淭here must be food on the table that is available and affordable鈥 I promise you a comfortable life,鈥 Duterte told the people at Luneta which according to the National Capital Regional Police Office swelled to 300, 000 at 7 p.m.
Duterte arrived shortly before 8 p.m. after the senatorial candidates in his slate鈥攚histleblower Sandra Cam, former Interior Secretary Raffy Alunan, Greco Belgica, Dionisio Santiago, former Quezon City Representative Dante Liban, Leyte Representative Martin Romualdez, former Metro Manila Development Authority Chair Francis Tolentino had delivered their speeches.
But Duterte has once again laced his speech with the threat to 鈥渒ill everybody鈥 who will exploit the ordinary people.
鈥淧ag nagagalit ako sa mga 鈥榯o. Papatayin ko talaga to (If I get furious at [oppressors], I will kill them),鈥 Duterte said.
But in the same breath, he said the Philippines must be a peaceful nation.聽鈥淵ou cannot build a country by killing people,鈥 Duterte said in his two-hour long speech.
Duterte who in the last two weeks before the end of the campaign faced corruption accusation, told his supporters that he had never taken money from the people, 鈥渘ot even a single cent鈥 in his 22 years in government.
鈥淲ala akong transaction na pinakialaman. Wala akong kalokohan sa Davao (I didn鈥檛 meddle with any transaction. I have no frivolities done in Davao),鈥 Duterte said.
While banking on his being an 鈥渙rdinary citizen,鈥 Duterte vowed to stake his life, honor and even the presidency in order to deliver real change to the lives of ordinary citizens.
鈥淚 am not your perfect option. But I am your last card. I promise you I will get down and dirty just to get things done. I will get things done. I will do it for the Filipino people,鈥 Duterte said.聽TVJ
