Victory will be ours, an upbeat Mar Roxas, the Liberal Party (LP) standard-bearer, said on Saturday despite the seemingly insurmountable odds presented by front-runner Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.
Before rushing off to the LP鈥檚 miting de avance in Quezon City, Roxas called on supporters to close ranks and prove that 鈥渕ost Filipinos remained decent.鈥�
鈥淭he (election) is not about Mar Roxas (nor) any single person,鈥� Roxas said. 鈥淭his has to do with what may happen to our country after the elections,鈥� he added. 鈥淲e鈥檙e fighting for the dreams of 100 million Filipinos.鈥�
At Quezon Memorial Circle later in the afternoon, President Aquino and members of his Cabinet led a crowd of 150,000 in sending off Roxas and running mate Leni Robredo during their final rally before Election Day on Monday.
Aboard private vehicles, rented vans, buses and passenger jeeps, supporters of the LP-led daang matuwid Coalition started flocking to the public plaza five hours before the 7:30 p.m. gathering.
鈥淚鈥檓 here because I want my voice to be heard against a looming dictatorship,鈥� said Marlyn Estancia, 61, a market vendor from Caloocan City who attended the event along with her neighbors.
鈥淚鈥檓 here to show that majority of Filipinos still believe in the programs that President Aquino introduced, like the 4Ps,鈥� she said, referring to the government鈥檚 Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program.
Jojo Gonzales, a call center agent, said he and wife Arminda traveled from their Lipa City home 鈥渢o prove that the 鈥榮ilent majority鈥� is real.鈥�
鈥淟ike my wife and myself,聽 there are supporters of Roxas and Robredo who are afraid to campaign for them openly because of the bullying and harassment from supporters of other candidates,鈥� Gonzales told the Inquirer.
鈥淭onight we wanted to show that we鈥檙e not afraid to stand up for our democracy and our children鈥檚 future. The silent majority will win this not for Roxas and Robredo, but for our country,鈥� he added.
Roxas, President Aquino鈥檚 anointed, earlier declared that he was 鈥渃onfident鈥� that he would win. 鈥淭he momentum is with us because the undecided voters are favoring us. Another major factor is the 鈥榮ilent majority,鈥� which is not silent anymore.鈥�
The LP candidate also denied rumors that he had suffered a heart attack or that he had opted to drop out from the race for Malaca帽ang two days before Election Day.
鈥淚鈥檓 here, very much alive. I don鈥檛 have any ailment,鈥� a smiling Roxas told reporters. 鈥淚t鈥檚 crystal clear: Our fight continues. We will continue this fight.鈥�
He added: 鈥淭his is the fight that defines us as a generation. This is the fight that will bring us to a better future.鈥�
Addressing his supporters, Roxas said:聽 鈥淭hey have thrown all kinds of allegations to break us. But we鈥檙e still here. We鈥檙e still wearing yellow and we鈥檙e getting stronger. We will win this.鈥�
Roxas, who on Friday issued an invitation for a unity talk with rival Sen. Grace Poe on national television,聽 admitted that he was saddened by Poe鈥檚 public rejection of his call that, he said, was meant to avert聽 the possibility of a Duterte presidency.
But he refused to disclose the matters he had wanted to discuss with Poe, saying it was 鈥渦seless鈥� to speculate what could have been the result of the meeting.
鈥淲e will never know what could have happened if the meeting (had) pushed through,鈥� he said. 鈥淚t would be useless (to discuss it).鈥�
Pressed if he wanted Poe to give way to his presidential bid, Roxas repeated, 鈥淎s I said, we would never know because she did not give (the meeting) a chance.鈥�
He had 鈥渧oluntarily initiated efforts for the unity talk,鈥� the LP candidate said, 鈥�(because) the issue was really about the good of the majority. The issue was our country and the forces of democracy (versus) the force of dictatorship.鈥�
House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. said Roxas鈥� experience as a long-time public servant and as a former investment banker made him the most qualified among the five presidential aspirants.
Without mentioning his name, Belmonte took a swipe at聽 Duterte, the foul-mouthed Davao City mayor, who had warned of public executions and extrajudicial killings to eradicate crimes within the first six months of his presidency.
鈥淭he presidency is not about the quickest in drawing the gun, or the best in fist-fighting,鈥� Belmonte said. 鈥淲hat we need is someone who knows how to run the economy, how to create jobs and how to bring good food to our table,鈥� he added.
鈥淚 have known Mar Roxas for a long time. I know his skills and capabilities. We don鈥檛 need somebody who is heavy-handed, and who espouses killing people without due process,鈥� the House official said.
LP senatorial candidate and former Justice Secretary Leila de Lima said Filipino voters should not allow the return of martial law in the country.
鈥淲e should not let the dark years (of dictatorship) return again,鈥� De Lima told the crowd who broke into cheers.
鈥淎re we electing someone who showed disrespect for women? Somebody who showed disrespect for persons with disabilities? Somebody who disrespected our laws?鈥� she asked.
