UNITED NATIONS, United States鈥揢N Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Friday called for a quick and peaceful return to civilian rule in Turkey following a coup attempt by the military.
鈥淢ilitary interference in the affairs of any state is unacceptable,鈥 Ban said in a statement.
Turkish military units launched an attempted coup, but President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed to defeat them in their bid to overthrow him.
鈥淚t will be crucial to quickly and peacefully affirm civilian rule and constitutional order in accordance with principles of democracy,鈥 said the statement from Ban鈥檚 spokesman.

Ban appealed for 鈥渃alm, non-violence and restraint鈥 in Turkey, noting that it was 鈥渁 moment of uncertainty.鈥
鈥淧reservation of fundamental rights, including freedom of speech and assembly, remain of vital importance,鈥 he added.
