MANILA 鈥 The family of 18-year-old Nick Russel Oniot,聽who was stabbed 18 times during a robbery in Taguig City, remains in grief聽over his death but a tinge of relief has come for them after the police arrested聽the two suspects quickly and killed one during an attempt to escape.
Thankful to the police for the arrest of the killers, Nick鈥檚 sister Shiela still thought that death was the great聽irreversible in life. Her brother is gone forever.
鈥淓ven if there鈥檚 a feeling of satisfaction that the suspects were arrested,聽it won鈥檛 bring back my brother鈥檚 life. We鈥檙e just glad that there was quick聽police action, and that鈥檚 what happened to the suspect,鈥 Nick鈥檚 sister聽Shiela, 25, told the Philippine Daily Inquirer on Wednesday.
Nick, an architecture student from Adamson University, was walking on聽Friday, Oct. 14, at 10:36 p.m., when he was mugged by two people along聽Martinez Street, several blocks away from his house on Pineda Street,聽Barangay Central Signal Village.
A barangay CCTV footage showed that the suspect who tried to grab Nick鈥檚 bag聽was Reynold Clave alias Sakura, resident of Barangay South Signal, who was聽notorious in the area as a holdup man, Pat Henry Due帽as, barangay chairman聽of Central Signal, told the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
Clave later pointed to Marvin Bernardo as the one who stabbed Nick 18 times聽when the student resisted the robbery.
Due帽as said Bernardo was recently given parole from a murder case that聽happened sometime in 2000. Bernardo also reportedly killed a fellow inmate聽while detained at the Taguig City Jail.
鈥淧eople like that should not be allowed to roam the streets. They shouldn鈥檛聽be allowed to live. They took away my brother鈥檚 right to live. They took聽away his dreams,鈥 Shiela said.
The blotter report at the Signal police community precinct identified the聽arresting officers as Inspector Esperanzate, Police Officer 2 Juan, PO2聽Castelon, and PO2 Tagasa.
It wasn鈥檛 clear if they were also the policemen who escorted Clave and聽Bernardo to the Taguig City police headquarters on Oct. 15, during which聽Bernardo supposedly grabbed the gun of his police escort. Another escort聽shot Bernardo, Due帽as said, quoting the police.
Clave underwent inquest proceedings for murder on Monday.
The Taguig City police declined to release the spot reports on the聽robbery-stabbing and the gun-grabbing. Shiela said it was understandable聽鈥渃onsidering what鈥檚 happening in the Senate.鈥 She was referring to the聽Senate committee hearing on the alleged extrajudicial killings in the war on聽drugs.
鈥淣akakasama ng loob. Ganon ba pinoprotektahan nila, yung ganong klaseng tao,聽kesa sa kapatid ko na walang ginawang masama (It hurts. Are these the聽characters the senators want to protect, instead of people like my brother聽who have done nothing wrong?),鈥 Shiela said.
She lamented the final moments of Nick, slumped on the pavement in his聽bloodied uniform, as bystanders did not even bother to check him or call for聽help.
Moments before that, the CCTV showed Nick fighting off his attackers who聽stabbed him. They only left Nick alone when a jeepney and a van passed by. 聽Nick tried to call the attention of the motorists to no avail. Several聽people who came out merely looked on until a motorcycle rider saw him and聽went to the barangay hall for help. Nick was declared dead on arrival at the聽hospital. 聽SFM
