Quake rattles Pacific coast of Costa Rica

SAN JOSE—A mid-sized earthquake shook the Pacific coast of the Central American nation of Costa Rica on Wednesday, with no immediate reports of damage or casualties, local officials and US quake monitors said.

The 5.4-magnitude quake struck at 1:01 pm local time (1901 GMT), said the US Geological Survey, which monitors earthquakes around the world.

The quake was centered 24 kilometers (15 miles) south-east of Cabuya, in the province of Puntarenas, the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica said.

The quake’s epicenter was 19 kilometers (12 miles) below the surface, the Costa Rica quake monitor added.
