The new spokesperson for the Philippine National Police on Wednesday promised he would take on fake news and make sure Filipinos are not lied to or deceived.
鈥淲e shall be quick yet cautious as we help the public distinguish truth from propaganda, facts from fake news, objectivity and impartiality from sensationalism and demagoguery,鈥� said Chief Supt. John Bulalacao.
鈥楪uiding light鈥�
The PNP Public Information Office will serve as a 鈥済uiding light for responsible journalism,鈥� Bulalacao said in a speech after assuming his post.
鈥淲e are aware of the heavy responsibility on our shoulders. We will make sure that the citizenry is not lied to or sent astray by those who wish to sow confusion,鈥� he said in Filipino.
Information power
Bulalacao took over the post from Chief Supt. Dionardo Carlos, who was designated head of the PNP Aviation Security Group.
鈥淚nformation is power,鈥� he said. 鈥淚nformation that is properly managed is reflective of a leadership that is not only responsible, mature and accountable but also one that conveys integrity, sincerity and clarity of vision and purpose.鈥�
PNP Director Ronald dela Rosa expressed confidence that Bulalacao would be an effective voice for the police and 鈥渕ore sensitive鈥� to the media.
Background
Dela Rosa said that coming from a poor family and used to hardships, perseverance and patience, Bulalacao could easily adapt to journalists.
A well-off spokesperson, on the other hand, could not feel the intricacies of life on the streets, he said.
Bulalacao, a member of Philippine Military Academy 鈥淢aringal鈥� Class 1988, was chief of the directorial staff of the National Capital Region Police Office prior to his new assignment. He also served as director of the Cavite Provincial Police Office and chief of the Tagaytay City police.
