DOJ dismisses complaint vs UST law dean over Atio hazing death

The Department of Justice (DOJ) on Thursday dismissed the criminal complaint against University of Santo Tomas (UST) Law Dean Nilo Divina over the death of Horacio “Atio” Castillo III.

Divina was included in the complaint for failing to stop Atio’s initiation rites.

Divina is also a member of the Aegis Juris Fraternity where 10 of its members will be facing charges in court for violation of the Anti-Hazing Law.

Aside from Divina, the DOJ also dismissed the criminal complaint against members of the Aegis Juris Foundation Inc. namely William S. Merginio, Cezar N. Tirol, Oscar T. Co, Alexander J. Flores, Alvin S. Dysangco, Henry C. Pablo, Gabriel T. Robeniol, Michael Joseph G. Fernandez, Allan Christopher S. Agati, Paulino L. Yusi, Arthur B. Capili, Arnel A. Bernardo and Edwin C. Uy for lack of probable cause.

Divina, in a statement said he was relieved by the DOJ’s decision.

“I have always maintained my full innocence throughout this unfortunate incident and thankfully, this has now been established beyond question. As they say, the moral arc of the universe may be long but it bends towards justice,” Divina said.

“I continue to pray for justice for Atio and have full faith in our legal system,” Divina added   /muf
