The Inter-Agency Council for Traffic (I-ACT) recorded a nearly 100 percent increase in traffic apprehensions during the first quarter of 2018 compared to the last quarter of 2017.
On Monday, the I-ACT said it recorded a 99.9 percent increase of apprehensions for the first three months of this year.
I-ACT data showed that 4,132 traffic violators were apprehended by from January to May 24 compared to only 1,379 from September to December 2017.
The agency issued tickets to 2,555 motorists for various violations that included driving vehicles with defective parts. I-ACT said 928 vehicles were impounded for 鈥渃olorum鈥� or illegal commercial operations, illegal parking, and out of line violations. Other motorists were apprehended due to 鈥渟moke belching鈥� or their vehicle鈥檚 emission of dark smoke beyond allowable levels.
鈥淲ith IACT鈥檚 intensified and wider scope of operations, we are able to double our apprehensions compared to last year,鈥� I-ACT head Tim Orbos said in a statement.
鈥淭hough it is a significant achievement for us, it is also a bit disappointing to see the number increase as years go by,鈥� Orbos, who was also an undersecretary of the Department of Transportation, added.
