Opposition Senator Risa Hontiveros on Thursday expressed confidence that the 14 senators who signed the resolution urging the Supreme Court to review the ouster of former Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno would not withdraw their support.

The senator told reporters in an interview that since the period of interpellation was extended, it is even possible for them to reach out to senators who haven’t signed the resolution.

Senator Panfilo Lacson argued against the adoption of the resolution, citing “encroachment” of the powers of the high court. He also reportedly asked Senator Francis Pangilinan to cite a provision in the Constitution that the Senate may review the SC’s decision.

Hontiveros said she respects the arguments of Lacson. While she was “saddened” that efforts to adopt the resolution on Thursday night failed, she said she is confident that the Senate will vote on the resolution in July.

“Inaasahan ko na, inaasahan namin na mapagbobotohan pa rin ito pagbalik naming at ma-make on record yung sense of the Senate na dapat itaguyod ang konstitusyon. Napakarisonable, napakasimple at napakaklaro (We are hoping that the Senate will vote for the resolution after the legislative break and we could still have the sense of Senate and promote the constitution. It’s reasonable, simple and clear),” she said. /ee
