Funke Akindele, the popular Nigerian actress and producer, broke a record as her latest film, Omo Ghetto (the saga), raked in the opening week at 124 million nairas.
Omo Ghetto the saga, which was a joint effort by the mother of twins and her husband, ended with a big bang in 2020!
The star-studded feature film that premiered on Christmas Day, according to a survey by CEAN, had gross revenue of N124,178,450 million.
The ginormous figures put the film on the historical role of Nollywood as the first Nollywood film in its opening weekend to gross over N98 million and the top-grossing film of 2020.
The current milestone comes as a shocker, given how sluggish the year has been for the film industry due to the Covid-19 pandemic. With its N 73.3 million openings weekend gross, the SceneOne TV film kicks out ‘The Wedding Party 2’ from the number one spot.
Starring Funke Akindele-Bello in the dual role of, among others, Lefty and Ayomide, Chioma Akpotha, Eniola Badmus, Tina Mba, Zubby Michael, Bimbo Thomas, Deyemi Okanlawon, the sequel follows the story of twin sisters who lead separate lives but are reunited through dramatic turns.
