Former Interior Secretary Mar Roxas on Tuesday filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) for the 2019 elections, ending over two years of political hibernation.
Roxas will join the senatorial slate of the opposition Liberal Party.
In filing his COC, Roxas said that he is not a quitter,聽noting that returning to the headquarters of the Commission on Elections seems like a d茅j脿 vu.
鈥淚 don鈥檛 have a 鈥榪uit鈥 on me,鈥澛爃e said in a press briefing. 鈥淚 don鈥檛 surrender. I don鈥檛 quit for our country.鈥
Roxas shied away from the national limelight after he lost to President Rodrigo Duterte in the 2016 presidential race.
He said, however, that he has moved on, adding that聽 his bid for next year鈥檚 polls is different from the 2016 political derby.
鈥淭his campaign is not about 2016. This campaign is about today, about the future,鈥 he said.
Roxas admitted the defeat was not easy.
鈥淥f course dumaan tayo sa roller coaster. Naranasan ko rin 鈥榶ung merong steps of grief and recovery. Nagsimula sa anger tapos denial, distancing [from people],鈥 he said.
But despite everything, he said that 鈥渓ife has been wonderful.鈥
Roxas said he would push to alleviate poverty in the country, saying he has seen the situation of Filipinos after taking a break from politics.
He also denied that controversies against him including Yolanda funds would affect his chances to win as senator, saying that budget records could be verified to see if there were irregularities.
