MANILA, Philippines – Vice President Leni Robredo on Thursday said she is hopeful that the drug charges against detained Sen. Leila de Lima will eventually be dismissed.

Robredo also welcomed the Muntinlupa Regional Trial Court’s decision to grant De Lima’s furlough request.

“Masaya tayo, ngayong umaga, nakita ko iyong pictures na nandoon na siya (sa Iriga City), masaya tayo na after so long, nabisita na niya,” Robredo said, referring to de Lima who was allowed by the court to visit her ailing mother.

Robredo believes that the charges against De Lima are baseless, adding that the lawmaker’s detention has prevented her from fully carrying out her sworn duties and responsibilities as a senator.

“While nakaka-participate naman siya sa paghain ng mga panukalang batas, iba pa rin kung nandoon siya na nakaka-participate sa debate, nakakapagboto. Sana, soonest possible time matapos na ito,” Robredo said.

“Nakikiisa tayo kay Senator Leila. Pinagdadasal natin, pinagdadasal natin iyong kalusugan at kaligtasan ng kaniyang nanay, pinagdadasal din natin iyong lakas ng loob, lakas ng loob sa kanya,” the Vice President said. /gsg
