QC lawmaker to remove ‘technical error’ in no-homework bill

MANILA, Philippines — Quezon City 5th District Rep. Alfred Vargas on Thursday said his office erroneously placed a provision that will punish teachers in his proposed measure calling for a “no-homework on weekends” rule.

Section 4 of Vargas’ House Bill No. 3883 would impose a P50,000 fine or imprisonment of one to two years on teachers who would violate the policy. But in a statement, he said this provision was a “technical error” that his office is now correcting.

“Hindi po sinasadyang naisingit ang penal clause sa panukalang batas para sa ating mga mag-aaral na ‘no homework on weekends bill’,” the congressman said.

Vargas nonetheless reiterated his push for the no-homework policy on weekends for students in elementary and high school, a proposal that is similar to Senator Grace Poe’s bill.

Sorsogon 1st District Rep. Evelina Escudero has filed a similar measure, House Bill No. 3611, which proposes a no-homework policy throughout the week.

Education Secretary Leonor Briones has expressed her support for the proposals.
