MANILA, Philippines — The government is close to reaching 30 percent of its target population for COVID-19 vaccination — that is, 30 percent of the 70 percent of the total population — to achieve herd immunity,  Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr., the national vaccine manager, said on Wednesday during a televised taped briefing with President Rodrigo Duterte.

This is based on the total 47,778,751 doses of COVID-19 vaccines administered since the drive started last March 1.

“So we can see that we are close to 30 percent of the 70 percent of the population that we have targeted and 20 percent of the total population,” Galvez said in Filipino.

Meanwhile, the national government has averaged 435,531 jabs per day so far in October.

Despite these numbers, the Philippines ranked last among 53 countries in Bloomberg’s latest COVID Resilience Ranking.

It also ranked last in Nikkei Asia’s global recovery index among 121 countries.
