No threat to Marcos, Duterte inaugurals, but PNP says no room for complacency

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) has not received any threat to the inauguration of President-elect Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos and Vice President-elect Sara Duterte-Carpio, but the acting police chief said that there is no room for complacency.

PNP officer-in-charge Lt. Gen. Vicente Danao Jr. during a press briefing in Camp Crame on Monday assured that they will not be lax despite the absence of threats, especially with recent incidents in Mindanao.

Duterte-Carpio is expected to hold her inauguration in her hometown Davao City, as a thanksgiving event for the people she served.

Her inauguration comes on the heels of a bus bombing in Koronadal, South Cotabato. While the PNP is eyeing extortion as a possible motive for the explosion, it has yet to rule out terrorism.

“As of now we have not received any serious threat, however, we should not be very complacent considering that these are our top leaders of the land, we should always be on alert,” Danao told reporters.

“So atin pong i-eensure ang safety and security po ng ating (So we ensure the safety and security of our) President-elect and Vice President-elect,” he added.

Danao said PNP is now coordinating with the teams of the two winning candidates, to ensure that both Marcos and Duterte-Carpio are safe.

“For the inauguration of both our President-elect and Vice President(-elect), definitely the [PNP] is ready to respond to any eventuality, and as a matter of fact we’ve been coordinated to the different focal persons para lang po ma-ensure natin ang safety and security ng ating President-elect and Vice President-elect regardless kung saang area nila gusto ma-inaugurate,” Danao said.

PNP is currently investigating the bus bombing in Koronadal City.
