MANILA, Philippines —Planners at all levels of government are considering bicycle infrastructure improvements as the new gold standard in public transport.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) met with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and experts on Wednesday to discuss several road projects, including the Edsa Greenways.

The Edsa Greenways project is one of DOTr’s initiatives to provide pedestrians with improved, environment-friendly elevated walkways in critical areas along Edsa.

On the use of bicycles, DOTr and the MMDA noted it is “relevant and tailor-fitted to the new normal in public transportation.”

Meanwhile, improving the operations and infrastructure of the Edsa Busway to serve the commuters better was also tackled during the meeting of both agencies.

Currently, the Edsa Busway project is giving free rides until December 31 following President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to extend its duration and the release of additional P1.4 billion funds from the Department of Budget and Management.— Christian Paul Dela Cruz, trainee
