Magnitude 6 earthquake rocks New Bataan town in Davao de Oro

MANILA, Philippines  — A magnitude 6.0 earthquake (earlier reported as 6.1) shook New Bataan Town in Davao de Oro on Wednesday night, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivlocs).

The earthquake, which was tectonic in origin, occurred 14 kilometers east of New Bataan at around 6:44 pm.

Phivolcs revised the tremor magnitude from 6.1 to 6.0.

The tremor is expected to cause damage and aftershocks are expected.

Since the tremor is inland, Phivolcs said there is no tsunami alert for the quake.

“[The] magnitude is not enough to generate a tsunami,” the agency said.

Intensity III was felt in Davao City.
