SBMA issues first RFID sticker

The LTO says SBMA issues its first motorcycle plate number and RFID sticker

MANILA, Philippines — The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) has issued its first motorcycle plate number and radio frequency identification (RFID) sticker, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) said Monday.

According to the LTO, the RFID sticker was issued by SBMA New Registration Unit (NRU) on February 16.

Before this, the LTO said SBMA only handled the registration of imported use of motor vehicles with an average of 100 transactions per day since it opened in 2019.

The issuance of the RFID sticker was approved by LTO chief Jay Art Tugade, to unclog the volume of transactions at the Olongapo District Office.

“The NRU started its operations at the SBMA EO on February 2, 2023, initially with the registration of used and new motor vehicles and motorcycles,” the LTO said in a statement.

As defined by former Metro Pacific Tollways chief communication officer Romulo Quimbo in 2020, the concept of the RFID ticketing system is akin to a barcode scanner reading a barcode in your car.

Currently, expressways in Metro Manila have already transitioned from cash-based payments at toll plazas to an independent cashless system, specifically, North Luzon Expressway, Subic-Clark-Tarlac-Expressway, Harbour Link, Cavitex (or Coastal Road), Cala Expressway South Luzon Expressway, Skyway, STAR Tollway, Naia Expressway, and Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway.
