MABALACAT CITY, Pampanga — A former communist rebel surrendered and turned over a firearm and an explosive to authorities.
The Tarlac police said in a statement on Monday, March 20, that the 34-year-old former New People’s Army member had served under the command of Neptali “Ka Atong” Santos, that operated in San Jose, Santa Ignacia, and Mayantoc towns in the province.
The police said the former rebel turned over a caliber .38 revolver and a rifle-propelled grenade to police and military officers.
Authorities said the rebel-returnee surrendered after police and military officers convinced him to return to mainstream society through the help of a religious pastor.
The former rebel was expected to receive cash and other benefits under the national government’s anti-insurgency programs. INQ
