Quiapo Church: Around 20,000 devotees join Black Nazarene procession on Good Friday

UPDATED MANILA, Philippines — Approximately 20,000 Catholic devotees joined the Black Nazarene procession on Good Friday, Quiapo Church spokesperson Father Earl Valdez said.

According to the local government of Manila City, the four-kilometer procession started at Quiapo Church in Plaza Miranda at 11:13 p.m. on April 6 (Maundy Thursday) and ended at the exact location at 12:31 a.m. on April 7 (Good Friday).

The procession went from Plaza Miranda to Carlos Palanca, Plaza Lacson, Carriedo, Evangelista, Gonzalo Puyat, Quezon Boulevard, Arlegui, Legarda, Conception Aguila, Carcer, Hidalgo, Bilibid Viejo / G. Puyat, Guzman, and Hidalgo streets.

The motorcade ended peacefully, according to the local government, quoting Manila Police District (MPD) director Police Brig. Gen. Anre Dizon.

On April 6, MPD imposed a strict gun ban on the procession to ensure the safety of residents and devotees who joined the event.
