Naia runways shut for inspection after earthquake felt in Metro Manila

MANILA, Philippines — The runways of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) have been closed for inspection following the 6.3 earthquake in Calatagan, Batangas, which was felt in Metro Manila early Thursday, the Manila International Airport Authority (Miaa) said.

Aside from the runways, the taxiways of Naia have also been closed, according to Miaa.

The runways had been closed at 10:23 a.m. and were immediately opened at 10:34 a.m. since no cracks were found in its surface.

“The Miaa Ground Safety Units conducted a cursory inspection and found no damage to the pavements. This is a standard operating procedure to ensure the safety of landing and take-off of aircraft,” the airport authority said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Miaa said the departure and arrival operations inside Naia terminals are not affected by the inspection conducted by their “terminal safety units.”

This disruption was caused by a magnitude 6.3 tectonic earthquake recorded at around 10:19 a.m. 15 kilometers southwest of the Calatagan, Batangas, with a depth of 119 kilometers, according to state seismologists.
