Public warned vs ailments due to El Niño

An infectious diseases expert on Tuesday warned Filipinos against an increase in waterborne and vector-borne diseases during the El Niño weather phenomenon as Filipino households store and conserve water in anticipation of service interruptions.

Dr. Rontegene Solante, president of the Philippine College of Physicians, said that diseases such as typhoid fever, cholera, shigellosis, hepatitis A, amoebiasis and gastroenteritis could be acquired by drinking or using contaminated water.

Solante said containers and vessels for storing water used for drinking or cooking should be “very clean” and have lids. INQ
