MANILA, Philippines — Mandaluyong City Mayor Benjamin Abalos Sr. on Wednesday urged the Philippine National Police (PNP) to continue its internal cleansing efforts among its ranks following the Mandaluyong police chief’s relief for testing positive in a surprise drug examination.

Based on reports, Col. Cesar Gerente’s test results were positive after a random drug test conducted by the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) officials last August 24.

The mayor also expressed his support for these surprise drug tests in line with the agency’s goal of a drug-free community.

“While it is unfortunate that our former chief of police, Col. Cesar Gerente, tested positive for drug use, we understand that these surprise drug tests promote the highest standards among our police force,” Abalos said in a statement.

“We would also like to take this opportunity to urge our PNP to conduct the strictest of tests and to enforce the highest of standards in choosing our next Chief of Police to avoid a similar issue in the future,” he added.

Following Gerente’s relief, Col. Mary Grace Madayag replaced him as Mandaluyong City police chief last August 28. Abalos likewise welcomed her appointment.

“The PNP had three recommendations for the vacated post, and among them, Col. Mary Grace Madayag stood out. We welcome her to Mandaluyong City,” the mayor said.
