DSWD disbursed P59M so far for 'Tara, Basa! Tutoring Program'

MANILA, Philippines — Assistant Secretary Romel Lopez, spokesperson of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), said that over P59 million have been disbursed so far for the department’s “Tara, Basa! Tutoring Program.”

In a media forum on Thursday, Lopez said that from this amount, around 50,000 Grade 2 non-reader students, 50,000 parents and guardians, and more than 6,000 student tutors have benefited.

The “Tara, Basa! Tutoring Program” is the DSWD’s reformatted educational assistance program that has been running for six months now.

Under this, second to fourth-year college students from low-income families will tutor Grade 2 students identified by the Department of Education (DepEd) as non-readers in exchange for P500 per day.

“Very close coordination tayo with DepEd kasi nga ‘yung facilities na ginagamit natin mga public schools, facilities nila,” said Lopez.

(We coordinate very closely with DepEd [Department of Education] here because the facilities that we use in public schools are their facilities.)

“Talagang mga coordinators, mga non-teaching personnel ang katuwang natin dito,” he added.

Meanwhile, parents or guardians who will attend “Nanay-Tatay Teaching Sessions” will also be paid P235 per day and will be tasked with teaching their children lessons from modules and workbooks provided by the agency.
