ON JACLYN JOSE’S PASSING: Sen. Robinhood Padilla urges colleagues to extend their condolences to the bereaved family of Mary Jane Sta Ana Guck, a.k.a. Jaclyn Jose, who died of a heart attack last Saturday, March 2, at the age of 60. In his manifestation on Monday, March 4, 2024, Padilla said the showbiz world is mourning the sudden death of the award-winning actress. Jose was a renowned dramatic film and television actress with multiple acting awards. She was the first Filipino and Southeast Asian to win Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival, for her role as a matriarch and meth dealer in Brillante Mendoza’s Ma’ Rosa. She also had three Gawad Urian best actress nods for her roles in Takaw Tukso (1987), Itanong Mo Sa Buwan (1989), and Sarong Banggi (2006). “She was like a professor, a mentor, to young artists, an inspiration to young artists like Coco Martin, and my daughter Kylie Padilla,” Padilla said. “I am asking my colleagues here in the Senate to join me in offering condolences to her family on the sudden passing of our admired and beloved Jaclyn Jose,” he added. MANILA, Philippines — Senator Jinggoy Estrada on Monday filed a resolution expressing profound sympathy and sincere condolences on the death of veteran actress Jaclyn Jose.

Estrada, who was an actor prior to being senator, called the actress’ untimely passing as a “tragic loss to the entertainment industry” as he filed the Senate Resolution No. 942.

“Engraved in the history of Philippine cinema are the awards and recognition for her exceptional skill and talent, and it’s challenging to match,” the senator said in a statement following Jose’s death.

Jose, born Mary Jane Santa Ana Guck, is the first and only Filipino and Southeast Asian actress to win Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival for her role in the film, Ma’ Rosa, in 2016.

According to the senator, Jose’s Cannes award paved the way for the filing of Senate Bill No. 1032 or the proposed World-Class Filmmakers’ Incentives Act which seeks to promote the production of world-class Filipino films by granting tax perks.

Apart from this international award, the actress also received local recognition, including those from Gawad Urian, Luna Awards, Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences Awards, and Metro Manila Film Festival.

“She brought life to her roles, making them feel real and relatable, transcending borders, and touching the hearts of those who watched. Her loss is a tragic one and will be felt deeply by the entire entertainment industry,” Estrada said.

Senator Robin Padilla, who was also an actor, called on his fellow lawmakers to extend their condolences to Jose’s bereaved family during his manifestation at the Senate on Monday.

“She was like a professor, a mentor, to young artists, an inspiration to young artists like Coco Martin, and my daughter Kylie Padilla,” Padilla said.

“I am asking my colleagues here in the Senate to join me in offering condolences to her family on the sudden passing of our admired and beloved Jaclyn Jose,” the senator continued.

The actress died of a heart attack on March 2 at age 60.
